Hogs

We just finished our February hog hunt. We only killed 11. Our January and February were both extremely low! I'm somewhat concerned that they (the pigs) have patterned us!!!! Time will tell.

Ladies

The ladies have done it again! After two different hunts, they managed to harvest 42 deer, some lady pigs and a coyote or two. Most of them filled their freezer for 2014 and will enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Headhunter Chronicles TV

Jason Bruce was here this past week filming for the 2014 season of Headhunter Chronicles. You never know what you're going to get when you meet someone from "TV" but, after four days in camp the true colors will usually show.

With Jason, what you see (on TV) is what you get! In a world filled with "recreates" of fist pumping high fives and "give me a minutes", it's refreshing to see something "real".

We had a great week and Jason is always welcome in our camp!

Feed patterns

Here in southern Oklahoma the rut has more or less run down. The bucks are back on a feed pattern trying to get themselves through winter after a vigorous rut. Recent inclement weather has magnified this need. This deer was taken during this time utilizing these facts. Remember the bucks have lost tremendous condition since October so aging them may be more difficult so, take your time and make sure they're mature! ONLY IF YOU WANT TO GETTEM BIG!!!

Rut

Time to abandon the feed pattern buck and shift more toward the does. Remember they can't get big if you kill them young. Here's a couple we killed recently. They were both very mature and weighed over 200lbs which is good for our country.

Spring Rains

Well spring is over and we're into the hot part of the summer. Steady rains throughout these times should produce some good antlers. As a matter of fact the antlers are growing so fast that I predict lots of breaks when the rut starts. If you have a chance to get a good one before the rut, take it.

The best of times, the worst of times.

When you're shed hunting or doing something else in the woods and you find a BIG skull from a buck that died, your first thought is YES!!!! I found a BIG skull. The next thought is "Dang, I'll never get to hunt him." That's all part of the highs and lows of hunting. I found this skull the other day and went through both emotions.
